July 2022 at Lowlands
As of October 2021, there is music weekly at Lowlands Bar (543 3rd Ave.) in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Sets are at 8 & 9:30 PM each Tuesday, and my friend Dierk Peters is curating Wednesdays at 8 PM (Our Borough Series). All shows are suggested donation ($10 strongly encouraged, if you can), and we hope you'll join us or spread the word so that this series can continue as a part of the Brooklyn jazz scene ca. fall 2021 and beyond.
Many thanks to KEYED UP!, a program of Jazz Generation, whose financial support allows us to compensate performers fairly for their work and for us to sustain weekly programming at Lowlands Bar.
July 5, 2022: SeaJun Kwon Sextet
SeaJun Kwon - bass/compositions
Elijah Shiffer - alto saxophone
Jacob Shulman, Kevin Sun - tenor saxophones
Jacob Hiser - piano
Colin Hinton - drums
SeaJun writes knotty, dense music that moves fluidly across the spectrum of improvised noise to detailed notated tonal material. He's also releasing his début album Micro-nap on Endectomorph Music this fall. It'll be fun to see how this music goes over at Lowlands; the previous and only other sextet gig was Dana Saul's in March 2022.
July 12, 2022: Simón Willson Trio
The maestro himself fills in for me while I spend a brief sojourn in Los Angeles. He'll be playing with two of our esteemed peers, Jeremy Corren on keyboard and Steve Crammer on drums.
July 19, 2022: Elijah Shiffer's All the Birds
July 26, 2022: Kevin Sun Quartet
The quartet rides again before Lowlands goes dark (musically) in August for a summer pause. I expect a mix of quartet classics as well as some new tunes and possibly some covers; possible sources include video game music, lesser-known standards, and more.
